About DP Alt Mode Standard

Hi,

I have some questions about DP Alt Mode on USB Type-C Standard version 2.0.
In Table 5-1, There are "DRP Toggling" and "DRP only" as USB-C Power Role.

(1)What is the difference between "DRP Toggling" and "DRP only" ?

(2)Is "DRP only" allowed to behave as Try.SRC or Try.SNK? Or does "only" mean that the device should not have any preferences(Try.XXX)?

Thanks!

  • Hi Naoya,

I've assigned this issue to an expert who will get back to you shortly.

Could you also specify which device you are working with?

    Thank you,

    Hari

  • Hi Naoya,

What device are you using? Also, could you give me some more context to your question? Is there something that you are running into with the GUI tool? A register with one of our devices you are looking at? I wasn't able to find much more than the table you mentioned, so if you can point me to where this applies to one of our devices, I'll be able to give you more guidance.

    Thanks,

    Emma

  • Dear Emma and Hari.

I am developing a DP ALT Sink product.
The PD Controller to be used has not been decided yet.

As I deepen my understanding of Type-C, I would like to hear the opinions of experts for a general interpretation of DP Alt Standard.

    Thank you,

  • Hi Naoya,

Can you attach the document? I am not finding the table you are talking about in the version I have.

In general, however, DRP toggling is the act of a port displaying Rd and Rp alternatively.

DRP only is a port that may take either power role. A DRP only port will toggle between provider and consumer when not connected.

    Regards,

    Emma

  • Dear emma.

Sorry, it is difficult to share the official VESA documentation.
If possible, your company is also VESA member, so please have it shared internally.

Document Title is "Vesa DisplayPort Alt Mode on USB Type-C Standard(DisplayPort Alt Mode) Version 2.0".
Please See Page 123 "Table 5-1: USB-C and USB PD Power and Data Roles".
"DRP Only" and "DRP Toggling" are listed in the same section.
    Our product is #8.

    Regards,
    Naoya

  • Hi Naoya,

Please use my explanation above to interpret the table and let me know if you still have any questions.

    Regards,

    Emma

  • Dear emma

    I understood your explanation.

I would like to know the reason why used different depending on "DRP only" and "DRP Toggling" in table 5-1.
Is #8 products allowed to behave as Try.SRC or Try.SNK?

    Regards,
    Naoya.

  • Hi Naoya,

I am not able to provide you further guidance on the spec that you mentioned, as I am not sure of the context it is in. I am not sure what #8 products are. You can try reaching out to VESA to see if they can clarify.

Please let me know if you have any questions on our PD controllers. I will be able to help you with part selection and general information on our PD controllers and how they interact with DP alt mode.

    Regards,

    Emma

  • Dear Emma

Thank you for all your assistance.
It's very unfortunate that you can't see the Vesa documentation.
    I will ask to VESA.

If I have any questions on your PD products, I will post.

    Reguards,
    Naoya
