SN65HVD234: Different Ground

Part Number: SN65HVD234

Hi team,

Found that a file to explain the Grounding and Isolation for RS485 devices as below, but want to check with you if CAN devices can also share this Grounding info, especially for the ground potential differences?

Thanks so much.

  • Lucas,

CAN transceivers are designed to work over large common-mode ranges in the case where there are potential ground differences in the system because of long physical distance between nodes. The SN65HVD234 in particular works over -7V to +12V common-mode range.

In a lot of CAN applications, the GND return path is included in the CAN bus cable harness, so all of the GNDs in the network end up being shorted together, but that's typically in an automotive application. The concepts in the application note you referenced apply to CAN as well, but generally RS485 applications have much larger distances between nodes and much physically longer communication buses. Because of this, ground potential differences become a more prominent issue in RS485 applications.

For the CAN application you're inquiring about, do you know how large the bus itself will be?

    Regards,

  • Lucas,

    Do you have any updates?

    Regards,
