DS125BR820: Categorization of Signal conditioning devices

Hi team,

TI classifies Interface>PCIe, SAS&SATA ICs and Interface>Ethernet ICs>Ethernet retimers&repeater. DS125BR820 is categorized in Interface>PCIe, SAS&SATA ICs but can still be used for ethernet signal conditioning. I wonder what this categorization is meaning and what I should take into consideration when I choose a device in high level - data rate, channel numbers, protocol type of the signal, ... etc.

Plus, when it comes to the protocol type, can I choose any device regardless of category? In other words, even though I'm looking for a device for ethernet protocol, can I choose DS125BR820 which is in PCIe, SAS&SATA ICs category?

Yes you can use a part from one category for another category or applications. Please note some applications may need certain feature or functionality so we need to make sure this is implemented correctly. For example, in Ethernet there is no RX detect as defined in PCIe. Therefor when using DS125BR820 for ethernet, we need to set RXDET to manual mode(please note table 2 of the DS125BR820 for details).

Also, it would be a good idea to do system simulation using DS125BR820 IBIS-AMI model for signal integrity analyses. Please use link below to request this mode:
