DP83TC811S-Q1: Master and Slave configuration in 100BASE-T1

Hi Expert:

I noticed that T1 has master mode and slave mode. It's unlike traditional Ethernet. Must I set one interface in master mode and another in slave mode when I connect two T1 nodes? Can both be master or slave mode?

I also noted that it has autonomous mode. I don't know what it is for.

Hi Yonghui,

Yes, that is correct. If you are using two connecting devices, one must be set to master and the other to slave mode. Both cannot be in master or slave mode. As for autonomous mode, it means that the PHY will automatically switch from standby mode to normal mode once POR is complete. You can read more about it in section 8.4.5 of the datasheet.

Hi Adrian,

Compared with tranditional Ethernet, that's strange. For a connection, we have to determind who is the master(It's a resistor stufffing option). Sometimes, we have to operate with 3rd device. We don't know it is master or slave mode. Is there any auto negotiation mode?

If so, we have to place a dip switch on MS/SLV configuration pin for customer setup.

Hi Peter,

There is no auto-negotiation mode for this device. As for master/slave mode configuration, you can set the mode for each device by using a strap resistor or by writing to registers. You can read the registers to determine if the device is in master or slave mode. Please refer to the datasheet on which strap to configure or register to write to in order to set the device's mode.

Hi Peter,

There are no rules. If you have two DP83TC811S-Q1 devices, both are capable of being in master or slave mode. As long as there is only one master and only one slave, you should be good.

Can you elaborate on your question a bit more? Are you wondering if you can switch between master and slave mode for a device? If so, you can refer to the DP83TC811S EVM User's Guide on how it is done.
