TCAN4550: Isolated CAN FD

Hi

We need to implement CAN FD on a processor that doesn't have support for CAN FD. 

There fore I have looked for an external Controller and have only found TCAN4550. 

However we need the CAN FD to be isolated and TCAN4550 has an internal tranceiver. 

What I am looking for is a CAN FD controller onto I could add e.g the isolated ISO1044 tranceiver.

I cant find a TI CAN FD controller without a tranceiver. 

Any suggestions how to fix this?

    The TCAN4550-Q1 actually has a mode where the internal transceiver can be bypassed and only the internal controller is utilized. Page 33 in the datasheet shows this in figure 8-11, and the way to configure the device for this function is explained in the paragraph above. Utilzing this mode, the device controller's TXD and RXD signals are brought out to the GPO2 and GPIO1 pins, respectively. This signals can be connected to the TXD and RXD of the ISO1044 to be translated into the CAN bus signals.

    Thanks for great reply, this solves my issue!

    Instead of ISO1044 + isolated DC/DC (RECOM R1SX)  I am now leaning towards ISOW7821 + TCAN1042.

    Do you think that is a good idea? This gives a very clean solution. Any cons?

  • Hi Dan,

    Both of these sound like a fine solutions. I don't see a way to further reduce BOM from either of these solutions - either separate isolated transceiver IC and DC/DC IC, or separate isolator w/ integrated DC/DC and transceiver IC. The choice between these will likely be made based on the requirements of the secondary power supply and what routing options are convenient on the board.
