HD3SS3212: Is there a suitable CC controller to go with this part to make a self powered UFP?

HD3SS3220 is better, since it's one chip solution.

If I am not taking any power from the USB connection do I really need a CC Controller though?

you still need CC controller to control the Mux direction when you flip the type-C cable

no, there are many types of type-c cables which need CC controller to make it work properly.

TUSB320HI/LI should be good enough

type-C to type-C cable

Type-C to type-A cable

active type-C cable with Vconn

you can not control  which cable is plugged in

Wouldn't the DFP supply Vconn power for an active cable?

The other two 'passive' cables should work as long as I can work out which way up the connector is?

The plan is a comparator on one of the CC lines.

I'll build a few prototype boards and see what works best.
