TPS65987D: PD Power Bank Design

Part Number: TPS65987D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25713, , BQ25792, TPS25750, TIDA-050047

I'm designing a power bank using the TPS65987DDHRSHR and BQ25713RSNT ICs.

Is the schematic of the TIDA-01627 ref design available? I couldn't find it on TI's website.

I plan to use the FRS (fast role swap) feature of the TPS65987DDHRSHR. To support this, I plan to connect the PP_HV1 of the TPS65987D to the VBUS pin of BQ25713 and the PP_HV2 of the TPS65987D to the VSYS pin of BQ25713. Is that correct?

Could TI review my schematic to ensure the connections are supported by the TPS6598X configuration tool?

  • Hello,

I would also recommend taking a look at TIDA-050047 as it uses the TPS25750D and the BQ25792 together. The TPS25750 will be compatible with the BQ25713 as well to configure the charger based on which PD contract is negotiated without the need for an EC/Host. However, this device will not have FRS functionality, is this a necessary feature for you? If you are designing a Power Bank, a normal Power Role Swap could work too which the TPS25750 is capable of.

As far as the TIDA-01627, unfortunately we are planning an update to that design which is why it is not available. However, I can provide some assistance on your design using the TPS65987D. The PPHV1 to the VBUS of BQ25713 sounds fine, but I am not sure about the PPHV to SYS connection. What are you hoping to do with the SYS connection of the charger? Also, are you planning on including an microcontroller in the design to configure the battery charger?

You may upload the schematic here for review as well.

    Thank you,

    Hari

  • Thank you Hari!

Actually the TPS25750D was my first choice for this design. However, since the TPS25750D is still in “preview” phase, I wasn’t sure they’ll be available when I assemble these boards. I don’t need the FRS feature; normal PRS is fine.

I don’t plan to use a microcontroller with the BQ25713. The BQ25713 will be controlled by the TPS65987D thru I2C. The SYS of the BQ25713 will be connected to the battery thru a FET. Do I need to specify the battery charger in the TPS6598x configuration tool?

Could I send you the schematic directly rather than post it here?

  • Hi,

When will you be assembling the boards? You will only be able to configure the BQ25713 if you use the TPS25750 as this is the only device that currently supports configuring the charger.

What is your email address? I can send you an email so that you may send me the schematic.

    Thank you,

    Hari
