DP83TD510E: Meaning of 1588-TX/RX?

There are some GPIO pins with optional 1588 TX RX functions (datasheet p. 47). Is this precision time protocol (PTP) related? Where can I find detailled information about it?

Hi Olaf,

The 1588 TX/RX functions is related to PTP. This is an IEEE standard you can read up on. However, I am not sure if DP83TD510 supports IEEE 1588. Let me consult with my team, and I will get back to you tomorrow.

Hi Olaf,

It seems that the page you mentioned had an error. The DP83TD510 does not support IEEE 1588 PTP, so those functions should not be there. May I ask for why you need a PHY with IEEE 1588 PTP support?

Hi Adrian,

Thank you for your answer! We are developing an acoustic sensor system that requires time synchronisation with rather low errors for direction finding (t_error_max < 10 µs would be a number). Do you have any suggestions for alternative single pari ethernet PHYs with PTP (or something similar)?

Hi Adrian,

10 Mbps would be sufficient for now but in the future (+= 3 years) 100 mbps would be more appropriate. And of course it would be very fine to get the second one in a pin compatible IC then. ;-)

It ought to be SPE.

Hi Olaf,

As of this reply, we do not have any PHYs that meet all your requirements. However, I can suggest the following alternative options:

The DP83630 & DP83640 offers PTP support, but supports only twisted pair
A microcontroller with IEEE 1588 PTP capabilities can be used in conjunction with the DP83TD510E
