TUSB4041I: USB Output Length Issue

Part Number: TUSB4041I
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB212

Hi everyone,

I have designed a schematic with TUSB4041I, 4 port USB hub solution. But it is still in development stage. Yesterday, I had wonder what if TUSB4041I's host ports unable to drive 5 meter cable. I've searched forum different kind of words, but nothing came up.

So here is the question; does TUSB4041 need re-driver circuit before ESD and USB output connectors for purpose of drive 2 to 5 meters cable? Or it has naturally includes that kind of solution inside of chip?

With my best regards.

Yasin.

  • HI Yasin,

To ensure that 2 to 5m cable can be driver a good PCB layout is critical, in addition TUSB4041I does have some internal flexibility in USB 2 driver strength. Please see the document linked below for more information. Typically TUSB4041I w/o redriver can a drive 5m cable but this is on the maximum limit of cable length. If you would like more confidence in your design you can include TUSB212 (USB 2 HS redriver) before ESD and USB output connectors to improve signal quality.

  • Hi Malik,

Thank you for your quick reply. In TUSB4041 datasheet, USB_R1 pin explanation is only connect about resistor value, it does not mention about output driver strength. I've examined the document and I will apply these resistor values if I need and design another page with TUSB212 in my project.

    With my best regards.

    Yasin.

  • Hi Yasin,

Sorry forgot to mention the USB_R1 resistor controls the USB 2.0 drive strength. Also keep in mind that TUSB212 can be designed in simply left DNI due to its unique flow through routing.
