TPS25850-Q1: Difference between Abs Max and Recommended Vin seems excessive.

Part Number: TPS25850-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25831-Q1, TPS25833-Q1

The datasheet for this part gives Abs Max input voltage (IN to PGND) as 40V.

This part would be ideal for my application but the nominal supply voltage I have to deal with is 28V allowing for 36V transients.

The recommended operating voltage for the part is given as 26V so it becomes unsuitable for my application, unless the 26V is a typo and it should read 36V.

What is the reason behind such a large difference between recommended and abs max please as it is >50% of the recommended which is unusually high?

Many thanks

  • Hi ,

The TPS25850-Q1 internal FET VDS max rating is 30V.  The 40V just a short time period transient withstand not for long time normal operation.

If your application is need support 36V for long time, I suggest you choose TPS25831-Q1 or TPS25833-Q1 single port solution. Thanks!

  • Thank you for your prompt reply.

If the VDS max rating for the internal FET is 30V then this would appear to contradict with statement on the front page of - "Operating voltage range 5 V-26 V, withstand 36 V".

It also strikes me as odd that if the FET in this part is rated to 30 V and the Abs Max is 40 V  i.e. 10 V above that, why is it on all the other parts in this family where the part is rated to 36 V, that the Abs Max also remains at 40 V?

Even though the explanation given is perhaps not the whole story you have confirmed that the part is not suitable for my application and you have suggested alternatives which I appreciate.

    Many thanks

  • Hi,

Device above 26V will stop switching  but it can withstand 36V max input voltage (don't have input slew rate requirement) .

Input 40V max rating should meet condition raising slew rate less than 20V/ms .
