TUSB8020BEVM: SuperSpeed support

Part Number: TUSB8020BEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB8020B

I am using TUSB8020BEVM to connect super speed USB 3.0 device. 2m long USB3.0 A/B cable is used between host and TUSB8020BEVM. And 2.2m USB3.0 A to microB is used between TUSB8020BEVM and our super speed USB3.0 device. However, the device is enumerated as high speed USB device.

May I know how to configure TUSB8020BEVM to enable the host enumerate our device as super speed USB3.0 device?

Thanks,

  • Hi Kelly,

The USB 3.0 connection should occur by default.  What operating system is running on the USB host?  If Linux, can you provide debug output or if it is Microsoft, can you use usbview.exe or USB Device Tree Viewer to determine at what speed the hub is connected to the host?  It should be connected at both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 speeds -> it should show up as two separate instances in the tree.

  • JMMN,

    Thanks for your help.

I change the cable between evaluation board and our device from 2.2m to 1m, then our device can enumerate as super speed device. But our application needs the cable between hub and device is 2.2m, would it be possible that we still can use TUSB8020B for our application.

I have the design using TUSB8020B with up stream and down stream both use USB C connector. When my device can't enumerate as SS device, I thought it is my design issue. Then I tried the evaluation board, it is the same. I would like to know whether this evaluation board has been tested to be good for SS when  cable between  host and evaluation board is 2m and cable between evaluation board and device is 2.2m or 2m. The shorted cable between evaluation board and device the application can take is 1.8m.

    Best Regards,

  • HI Kelly,

The TUSB8020B has been tested with USB 3.0 cables of 3M+ on both upstream and downstream ports.  There is no issue with long cable lengths and the hub device.  Please check that the type-c cable you are using supports USB 3.0 and that it is good quality ->  does it work on other USB 3.0 ports?

  • JMMN,

    Thank you for the reply.

When this 2.2m cable is used between host computer and our USB 3.0 device, it has no problem. The data rate can go up to 4.4Gbps. I teste with both USB 3.0 device with C connector and  USB 3.0 device with micro B connector with evaluation board. I tried both 2.2m A/C cable, 2.2m A/microB cable and 3m A/C cable with evaluation board in place of our customized hub, same problem.

Since  it is confirmed that this evaluation board has been verified to work for cables up to 3m on both up and down stream, I will do further debugging.

    Best Regards,

    Kelly

  • Ok, also try flipping the Type-C cable sometimes they don't truly support SS on both orientations.

  • Handling over direct email / lab test.  Closing thread for now.
