THVD1552: Short-circuit Output Current

Hello team,

My customer has a question for Ios of THVD1552.

In Figure 29 of the data sheet, 10Ω (0.1W) is connected to the driver output.

Looking at the specification of Ios max 250mA (-15V ≤ Vo ≤ 15V) in the data sheet, the 10Ω register will be burned out.

Please tell us what happens when the output is ground fault (short with GND) in this circuit.

In their application, Vo will be set to 5V.

You made a good point. The 0.1W 10Ohm resistor can work with normal operation not with short condition. Depending on the D input, the output could be drawing around 100mA if it's grounded (with D=H).

Do you think it is better to use different resistors, considering the case of a short circuit (because of 10Ωx0.1A=1W)?

Shotaro,

I think the power consumption is estimated by the voltage multiplying the current over the resistor. Anyway, it's OK to use resistors with higher power rating. 10Ohm is preferred to minimize the signal attenuation.

The correct calculation is 0.1^2x10=0.1W...
