DP83867IR: Configuration for MII

Can you please point me to the documentation that describes how to connect and configure the DP83867IR using MII? We are connecting to an AM65xx processor.

We are working on a industrial protocol project and apparently the EtherCAT stack requires MII only.

We would like to be able to configure the ethernet port dynamically to switch between MII and RGMII so that the same port could be used for other, more standard purposes.

It looks like the pin functions table of the data sheet describes the MAC interface assignments- is that all there is to go on?

Should we forgo RGMII and just try to switch between MII and GMII to get the higher speed when needed?

Does the GUI tool explain all of the register settings required?

(sorry for some of the basic questions... I'm pretty new to these devices)

Hi Steve,

The DP83867IR datasheet also describes each MAC interface available in the PHY and Figures 18, 19, and 20 illustrate the pinwise connections between the MAC and the PHY.

Hi Steve,

You can connect both pins necessary for RGMII and MII between the MAC and DP83867, ensuring that PHY is configured in the correct mode, the unused connections (say RX_ER when the PHY is in RGMII mode, will not negatively impact the PHY).

Can you also clarify what register settings you are interested in? The USB-2-MDIO tool will not provide register descriptions, but that can also be found in the datasheet.

Thanks for the response; I was hoping to find a more detailed application diagram- the Figs. you refer to are very high level. Do you know of any reference schematics that would be useful? From the pin descriptions it seems that these pin descriptions are more/less the same for each mode (the exceptions are noted as you point out).

Maybe I'm making this a lot harder than it really is.

My question about the GUI is does it compute register values (offline) and/or create any source code that we could use to program the registers over MDIO?

Hi Steve,

The pin connections will be the same for each MAC interface mode. You can also look at the reference design here as an example of connections between the DP83867 and a processor.

The USB-2-MDIO GUI will not create any source code but in the help menu provides an example script that can be used to execute many register read/writes in succession.
