TUSB8041: Dual host support

Part Number: TUSB8041
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HD3SS6126

Hi Team,

I have a question about USB3.0 Hub.

My customer is considering to use TUSB8041 as dual host hub.
As below picture, there are two hosts and what I want to do is routing individual SSTXM/P and DM/P to different host.

Does TUSB8041 support such use-case?

Regards,
Kai

  • Hi Kai,

TUSB8041 does not support this kind of application. It is not complaint to connect USB 3 & 2 PHY to different USB Host. Customer can use device like HD3SS6126 to switch upstream port to different hosts.

  • Hi Kai,

Electrically this idea is possible, but it is prohibited by USB specification since all USB 3.0 capable hosts/ hubs / devices need to be able to drop to USB 2.0 speeds.  Two other issues are 1. The two hub instances inside the TUSB8041 (USB 2.0 hub and USB 3.0 hub) share the port power controls which could lead to the ports being unexpectedly powered off / on. and 2. The drivers on the USB host typically expect to see a USB 2.0 hub instance that has the same BOS descriptor as the USB 3.0 hub instance which may cause driver issues.

In a completely closed system, this application may be possible, but it is not recommended.
