HD3SS3220: Can I use this part to do DP daisy chain?

Part Number: HD3SS3220
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: HD3SS460

hi,

my customer has 2 type C port and only has power sink. two ports are configured to DRP for DP.

When one port is UFP port after CC communication, the other port will be changed to DFP only. It works like Daisy chain to pass through the DP.

Can I use HD3SS3220 for this feature?

BR,

frank

  • can you draw a block diagram? two lanes DP or four lanes DP

  • Hi Frank,

If DP alt mode is a desired feature then PD controllers will need to be used. Since HD3SS3220 can only operate as a CC controller it cannot be used for DP alt mode applications. If DP is "passed" from on port to another you will need PD controllers on each port and they will need to communicate with one another.

You will want to consider using HD3SS460 for each port as a Type-C Alt mode mux.

  • Malik,

    Thanks for comment.

do you have reference design for this? not sure how to connect two HD3SS460 and AUX signal.

Controller needs to send command to set one HD3SS3220 to DFP when the other one becomes UFP, right? do you have command flow to avoid compliance or compatibility issue?

or you have other Asic suggestion?

    BR,

    frank

  • Hi Frank,

No reference design for this application. Since HD3SS460 is a passive mux there are less considerations here. USB lanes could be connected to USB and Alt mode lanes connected to Alt mode lanes. Will this design only pass though DP? What is happening to the USB signals? A block diagram would help here.

HD3SS3220 cannot be used here since both ports will support DP alt mode. HD3SS3220 is not a PD controller. Devices like TPD25750 should be considered here.
