TPS65987D: SPI Programing Device selection

Hello there,

I am designing a prototype board with a TPS65987 controlling a BQ25703 (as per SLVAE18.pdf) and have looked at the the schematic for the TPS65987. The SPI interface is controlled using an FT4232h, which also has an EEPROM for vendor information.

My question are:

Can I use any MPSSE device (like https://uk.farnell.com/ftdi/c232hm-edhsl-0/cable-usb-mpsse-0-45a-5v-o-p-50cm/dp/2352016?gclid=CjwKCAiAsaOBBhA4EiwAo0_AnP66XdemzAMqg3xxyabuaiqQjSW6IF6KcVKUCvbWrVxOLnxwmDj0khoCIvoQAvD_BwE&gross_price=true&mckv=sXJjjTnYr_dc|pcrid|483686871813|kword||match||plid||slid||product|2352016|pgrid|112844168343|ptaid|pla-310042457748|) or the FT4242h mini module.
I would like to use the the TPS6598x Customisation utility to test my design and program the memory. Does the utility only work with devices with TI vendor ID's?

1. I am not familiar with this type of cable. How do you plan to use it?

2. Are you asking which microcontrollers the TPS6598x Application Customization can work with or our PD controller itself?

Hi Emma,

I am planning to use it as a USB-SPI bridge, much like the FT4232 on the TPS65987EVM board, or use a FT4232 Mini-module in the same way. https://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Documents/DataSheets/Modules/DS_FT4232H_Mini_Module.pdf
No, I'm asking if I use either the cable or Mini module, will I still be able to use the configuration utility?

Hi Chris,

The configuration utility is compatible with the aardvark I2C-SPI bridge. I would recommend using the aardvark or having a micrcontroller and use a uB cable to flash your configuration onto your device.

Hi Emma,

OK, well it seems a bit strange that the SPI bridge fitted to the EVM board is an FDTI FT4232 and that the I2C/SPI adapter settings in the Application Customisation tool allows to use an FDTI device.

So does it only detect the FDTI device that has the vendor specific information (I.e. says its from TI) or can it work with any FDTI device?

Hi Chris,

You should be able to use the FTDI bridge and use their external flash program that accompanies that device. You can use our GUI to generate the binary that will be flashed over the FTDI flash programmer. The only microcontrollers compatible with the TPS6598x Application Customization GUI are the FT4232HL and the TM4C123GH6PM. The only I2C SPI bridge compatible with the TPS6598x Application Customization GUI is the Aardvark adapter.
