TPS65987EVM: Connection and Power Supply Issues

Hello,

A customer is currently using the USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM (SLVUBJ5) and the TPS65987EVM (SLVUBO9A).

When they are running the Software tool GUI they can connect to the evalboards via the Micro USB connector and read out chip registers.

But when they attach a power supply ( a Dell Laptop 20V power supply) the connection disconnects.

Any idea why this would be occurring? Please let me know when you get the chance, thank you!

Hi Domenick,

A few questions:

1. Which board is the source and which board is the sink?

2. Which board are you connecting the power supply to when you see this disconnection?

3. Do you see the boards reconnect when you add in the power supply?

Is there a certain source/sink configuration that would affect the connection?
What would make a difference in each configuration?
I cannot see the boards from my end.

Is there any additional information you need to better understand the issue?

Hi Domenick,

The Power Duo Source Board can only act as a source. The Power Duo Sink Board can only be a sink. Out of the box, the TPS65987EVM can act as either a source or a sink, however S4 switch 4 should be pushed to the right (enabled) to enable dead battery. So the customer can only use the boards in these roles. I would recommend passing along this video for the customer to try out the different configurations of the EVMs:

Thank you for all of the support so far. The customer was able to reinstall the FDTI drivers on their PC and their issue is solved. Thank you!
