Direct connect of SGMII between devices on the same board

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83869HM

Hello,

I have two devices on the same board that I want to connect to each other through 1 G Ethernet.  One has a fixed SGMII port that cannot be changed.  The other device is an FPGA where I have some flexibility in terms of the standard it supports.

I would like to connect the two devices together without having to put down a full ethernet physical interconnect (PHY, Termination, Magnetics) for each.  Is there a solution that would bridge these two devices directly?

Thank you for your help,

Rob Curtis

  • Hi Rob,

I understand SGMII is to be used to connect to PHYs across the MDI using 1G Ethernet. Some additional questions I have:

    Is this a fiber application?

What is the MAC interface used for the TI PHY?

    Thank you,

    Nikhil

  • Hello Nikhil,

I have two devices on the same assembly.  One has a SGMII interface that I cannot change, the second I could be flexible in the Ethernet connectivity.  I am looking for a chip that will bridge the SGMII interface directly to the other device without having add external components.

    Device1(SGMII)<=> BRIDGE<=>Device2(SGMII)

Device1 and Device2 are on the same board separated by 5 inches.  Does TI have something that would work for the BRIDGE?

    Thanks,

    Rob

  • Hi Rob,

If both devices are capable of SGMII, the only circuitry required should be AC coupling caps. Else if an SGMII-RGMII bridge is needed, you may refer to the DP83869HM.

    Thank you,

    Nikhil
