    Hello,

    If you are referring to the MSP430F5529, this is used to easily configure the PHY's registers as well as check the status registers of it. It is not the only way to program/check the PHY's registers. The main connections you need are the SMI (Serial management interface), MDC and MDIO. Please refer to section 9.4.9 in the datasheet.
