DP83867E: PHY extended setting "Robust Auto-MDIX"

Part Number: DP83867E

Hello team,

I received a question from the customer about PHY extended setting "Robust Auto-MDIX" of DP83867. I would appreciate if you could give us a advice about it.

In checking the link operation of PHY (DP83867), it was confirmed that it did not work properly. As a result of the investigation, it was confirmed that this problem can be solved by enabling the extended setting "Robust Auto-MDIX" of the PHY. The PHY data sheet does not state that it is mandatory to enable "Robust Auto-MDIX".

Could you give us feedback on the impact of implementing this setting?

■ Occurrence phenomenon (case where a problem occurs)
DP83867 link setting: fixed at 100 Mbps
Link setting on the opposite side: Auto-negotiation

If you connect to each other (*), the phenomenon like "link up does not occur" or "it takes several minutes to link up" occurs.
* This connection form is not a preferable connection form, but at least it should link up.

Best Regards,

Ryotaro Fukui

  • Hello,

If you are fixing a speed, thereby disabling auto-negotiation, IEEE specifications dictate that auto-mdix (which controls the choosing between MDI and MDI-X automatically) is also disabled. TI offers a workaround on this where if you would like to disable auto-negotiation but still keep "auto-MDIX" lite capabilities, this is where robust Auto-MDIX setting factors in.

    Sincerely,

    Gerome
