TCAN1043-Q1: Regarding Vbat power supply

Part Number: TCAN1043-Q1

Hi,

  1. This CAN transceiver "TCAN1043-Q1" has VBAT pin for battery supply that is powering an internal LDO.I assume that this supply acts as a backup when VCC is cut off. Is it possible to use this IC without  providing VBAT pin, (VBAT pin left open )  just by providing VCC (5V) supply voltage.

2. Also can system level ASIL rating be achieved with this part ?

  • Hi Srivatsan,

    1. You understanding of the Vsup is correct in that it allows the device to operate and keep a low-power receiver active while Vcc is unavailable. However, the Vsup supply is critical to device operation and will be deactivated (or in a protected mode) if this supply is below the UVsup threshold. However, this supply does not need to be at typical battery voltage as the supply range extends down to 4.5V (same min as Vcc). Because of this, Vsup and Vcc can share the same supply rail as long as both remains within both pins' operational range (4.5V to 5.5V).

    2. The functional safety information for this device can be found in the Technical Documentation section of its store page. This document can be used for system-level functional safety evaluation. Let me know if you have any questions on this.
