Hello,

I have a custom board where I am using the TPS65987D in various power paths and have had little success.

I am trying to use it as a DRP device, where I can either:

1. Connect VBUS through a USB-C to a phone, to supply 5V out on PPHV1 to my system power.

2. or while VBUS is connected through USB-C to a phone and if I supply 10-20V, the TPS65987D would switch from supplying power through PPHV1 from the phone and will source VAR_DCDC (5V, 9V, 15V, 20V @ 3A), like shown in the EVM and charge the phone, through PPHV2 path to VBUS.

3. And then switch back to supplying 5V out on PPHV1 if I disconnect the 10-20V input

All while maintaining my connection to the upstream side of my USB Hub TUSB8042A

I am also using the FT4232H Mini Module to flash the device, same IC from the EVM used to flash the PD, I have had some success flashing the memory occasionally through SPI Flash.

Any suggestions or configuration binary file that could be provided would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I have a few clarifying questions first

Is the 10V-20V input another Type-C port or some type of barrel jack?
You use the term DRP, but both of your power scenarios have the TPS65987D acting as a source? Will you only have the TPS65987D acting as a source?
For the 10-20V input supply, is there some type of status signal you can send to the TPS65987D indicating that a 10-20V supply has been connected?

1. It's a barrel jack

2. It will be acting as a source and sink. PPHV1 for Sink and PPHV2 for Source

3. There is no status signal from the 10-20V supply that I can send

I see now. When there is no barrel jack connected, you want the TPS65987D to act as the sink through PPHV1, and when there is a barrel jack connected, you want the TPS65987D to act as a source. Thank you for the clarification.

Your solution will be similar to that of the USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM. On this design, pressing the buttons changes the configuration that the PD controller loads and advertises. For your system, the barrel jack being connected would be your "button press", indicating to the TPS65987D to load a new configuration and act as the source. That is why some type of status signal is needed. What are you using as your DCDC?

I am using the same circuit from the EVM for my DCDC.

But essentially, the board never comes out of dead battery mode allowing sink through PPHV1.

Hello,

Yes so you can use the EN_VAR signal that is going to the LM3489 as your trigger event on when to load the configuration that enables 20V sourcing capabilities. You can use the USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM as a reference and starting point. Instead of having the button being your trigger event, the enable for the LM3489 will be your trigger event. Can use the USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM source project as a starting point, which can be loaded using the latest version of the application customization tool

I tried this template as a base and it did not work, instead I took the template used from the TPS65987EVM and that works for charging and negotiating between 5,9,15 and 20V. But I am not able to sink 5V from VBUS to PPHV1. Seems like PPHV1 is only turning off and on, as I am only getting 2.7V out. I have attached my project file.

Hi Adam,

I am now able to sink 5V from VBUS to PPHV1, it was a reset pin issue that we have now resolved. The last thing I am having an issue with is not being able to charge and communicate data. I am able to communicate data and not charge or charge but not communicate data.
