TPS65987D: SMBus Smart Battery interface

Part Number: TPS65987D
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25703, TPS65987, BQ25713, TPS25750

I am following the the application note SLVAE18 whereby I am designing a USB-C PD controller connected to a BQ25703 via I2C.

However the battery I am using is a Smart battery with an SMBus. I would like to read the temperature from the Smart battery via the SMBus and be able to shutdown the charger if an over/under temp condition occurs.

Can I use an I2C port on the TPS65987 to read this temp data an act accordingly by shutting off the charger? Do you have any examples?

  • Have you considered the TPS25750D for this socket.  It is able to manage the charger directly and would be easier to use for this purpose.

Neither of the chips has the ability to poll and I2C interface, you would have to utilize a GPIO that is mapped to one of the input events and then have that event trigger and I2C write.

Please read the TRM for each device to see if they meet your needs and also look at the application notes on the TPS6597 to see some examples of I2C events.

  • Hi Chuck,

I hadn't considered that IC (I had no idea it was available). It seem much more suited to my requirements and much easier to set up. One of my other requirements is that it the charger must supply power to the system if the battery is removed.

From testing with the BQ25713 evaluation board I found I had to increase the minimum input current register in order to achieve this. Can this TPS25750 communicate this to the charger? I also need Hot plug detection for display port too. Is it configurable for that?

  • Chris,

If you require Display Port Alternate Mode, then you will need to use the TPS65987DH, but you will need to manage the software yourself.  The TPS25750 does not support alternate mode.

  • Hi Chuck,

Ok, that's a shames as the TPS25750 seem to tick alot of boxes, except that one.

    thanks for your help.

  • Hi Chris,

Glad we could help you find a solution with the TPS65987DDH.

    Thanks,

    Emma
