LMH1297: EQ functionality over 5Gbps to 10Gbps

Part Number: LMH1297

Can you confirm if the EQ will still work at arbitrary or non-SMPTE bitrates (ie. anything between 5Gbps to 10Gbps) for the LMH1297? Datasheet mentions that the reclocker will be bypassed which makes sense but is the EQ able to lock onto any arbitrary bitrate?

  • Hi Steve,

Yes LMH1297 equalizer will be able to work at non-SMPTE data rate. As you noted, retimer is bypassed since device is not operating in SMPTE data rate. Within this range, we should make sure eye opening is good enough for the receiver and it will not exceed its jitter tolerance. Suggestion is for the customer to get one of the evaluation boards and operate it at intended data rates. Further add about 25% additional jitter to take into account part to part and temperature variations. Also, it would be good to make sure signal source launch amplitude is within the SMPTE spec(800mV+/-10%). Better yet, they can use another LMH1297 on the driver side.
