TCA9535: Should the thermal pad be soldered to ground?

Part Number: TCA9535

Does it matter?  If the thermal pad is soldered to the PCB but electrically floating, will that affect the function of the device?  Pin #9 is connected to Ground in both cases.

The TI datasheet for the part shows the thermal pad grounded in the PCB layout example, but no thermal pad connection is shown in the schematic examples.

 Thanks,
Lauren

  • Hi Lauren,

The thermal pad is only necessary for thermal dissipation. We recommend soldering to GND because typically the GND layer of the PCB is the largest unbroken copper sheet. The thermal pad has no actual electrical connection to the die. So you can solder it to the PCB but leave it electrically floating.

    Best,
