TPS25750: If just for PD contract, how many current need

Part Number: TPS25750
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: USB-PD-CHG-EVM-01, , BQ25792

Hi,

I can't tell how many current need if TPS25750 just uses as PD contract, If I already had good power supply on PPHV, I think after contract, PPHV path can fully support VBUS, is there any other condition which have to need supply 5V5A at PP5V pin?   ( In USB-PD-CHG-EVM-01, there is a 5V5A buck to support PP5V pin, just don't know why need such big current on this pin? ) , thanks.

  • The TPS25750 will be able to source 3A of current through the PP5V power path and up to 600mA of current through the VCONN power path if a signed cable is used to provide more that 3A of current at 20V.  This results in a 3.6A of current draw.

The other support circuitry on the board will have some power draw, so the minimum output current that we recommend is 4A from the buck.  We selected a 5A buck for this particular EVM, but you can scale down to as little as 4A of current capability without system level ramifications

  • Hi,

Still don't get what I want.  just wonder why I have to source 3A from PP5V . why can't I source 3A from PPHV ?   According to below picture  “TPS25750 Host Interface Technical Reference Manual” , doesn't this mean Powerpath is selectable?  but this register can't configure through GUI so far.

please suggest what is PP_EXT1 stand for? I can't find related introduction in the doc. thanks.

  • Yue,

The TPS25750 only supports 5V contracts through the PP5V path, the higher voltage contracts when using BQ25792 or other supported charge.  The power path on the HV TPS25750 does not support all of the necessary features to be used as full type C source and the TPS25750 requires that PP5V be supplied in order to source power at all.
