TCAN4550-Q1: how to calculate the min speed of SPI based on speed of CAN?

Part Number: TCAN4550-Q1

Dear team,

I have a question about what dominant the min speed of SPI. As far as I understand, SPI must has a min speed, if SPI is slower than that speed, FIFO could be full. please correct me if I am wrong.

Can you provide some suggestions on how to calculate it?

My use case is when using TCAN 4550, if the max speed of can is 2M, is 12M SPI okay?

  • Lijia,

To answer your first question, the minimum speed of SPI is defined by what s specified by the TCAN4550-Q1. While it is true that your FIFO could become full if your SPI throughput is too slow, you SPI rate isn't the only thing that determines this. If you are interested, we have a SPI throughput calculator for this device that takes the user's inputs based on their system. You can email me directly if you'd like a link to this calculator.

To answer your second question, 12MHz SPI is perfectly fine for 2Mbps CAN data rate.

    Regards,
