Tool/software:
Hi,
customer plans a network with 20 nodes. Is this ok or is there a max limit of nodes? Is there anything to take care of such big networks? What is the max limit of cable length?
Regards, Holger
The characteristics of CAN transceivers are standardized. At 1 Mbps, the CAN specification allows up to 40 m with up to 30 nodes. For higher CAN FD data rates, the bus is required to have a lower capacitance.
Hi Clemens,
is there any app notes how to set the capacitance?
Regards, Holger
Hello Holger,
20 nodes should be okay assuming you are following the standard's recommendations. "The High-Speed ISO 11898 Standard specifications are given for a maximum signaling rate of 1 Mbps with a bus length of 40 m with a maximum of 30 nodes" (link #1).
Please see the following App notes which provide suggestions for bus rate vs signaling length, and recommendations for designing the CAN bus. Let me know if you have specific questions.
Best,
Andrew
