Thanks for reaching out.

RE/ is an active low input where as DE is active high input. In case of half duplex operation you can short DE and RE/ so that device is either transmitting or receiving at any given time.

RE/ is internally pulled high so you really don't need any pull up on outside. Can you share the details of the reference you're referring to above for us to review better?
