Iso3080

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO3080

I am designing with the iso3080 and am wondering if the grounds on the two sides are usually connected at a single point or how they should be handled. Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Angela,

To help you better, kindly elaborate your system/application scenario.

To utilize the advantages of Isolation you should keep these two grounds separate. That is connect Side-1 ground to side-1 system ground and side-2 ground to the bus side ground. The advantage of keeping these two grounds separate with Isolated transceiver is that it breaks the ground loop to allow for a much larger common-mode voltage range. Also the isolation devices can significantly increase protection and reduce the risk of damage to expensive control circuits.
