SN54BCT760: max current out from ground pin

Part Number: SN54BCT760
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPL7407L, SN74BCT760, SN74BCT760-EP, SN54AS760, SN74LVC244A

Hello Team,

My customer would like to know the current capacity through Ground pin. Icc is given in the datasheet but not Ignd. Is the total current should not exceed 95mA? I would basically like to know the limit of Ignd for this device.

Regards,

Renan

  • Hi Renan,

Since the datasheet doesn't specify a limit for the ground pin exclusively, I can't guarantee anything.

Based on our other products that do include a limit, I wouldn't recommend driving more than 2 outputs at the maximum rating at the same time.

    To be specific:

The datasheet lists I_OL(abs max) as 96mA . 192 mA would be a reasonable limit for the entire device.

I wouldn't recommend using a logic gate for power delivery in general -- if the customer needs a low-side driver with more than a few mA of drive current, I'd recommend something like the TPL7407L (a low-side driver).

  • Hello Emrys,

    Thank you for this response.

In regards to your recommended IC TPL7407L, do you have any other IC which directly replaces SN74BCT7760. I am specifically looking for an Open Collector output. In this case, SN74BCT760 has the capability to enable/disable IC. The output current-sinking capability needs to meet 30mA. Let me know if you can recommend something better.

    Regards,

    Renan

  • Hi Renan,

Is this 30mA DC (ie driving a 30 mA LED) or is this 30 mA for transient (ie driving a long trace)?

  • Hello Emrys,

It will be 30mA driving long trace.

    Regards,

    Renan

  • Hi Renan,

If that's the case, then the current is transient and almost any logic device can meet the requirement.

If they want to stick with the same footprint, the only other options are the SN54AS760 or the SN74BCT760-EP -- not sure if they need the military rating or not.

We don't have much in the way of 8 channel open-collector (or open-drain) options from the logic team. More modern solutions use push-pull outputs like the SN74LVC244A .
