CD4516B: CD4516B

Part Number: CD4516B

I looked at the data sheet for the CD4516B bidirectional counter and I wanted to make sure my conclusion was correct.  I am going to cascade four CD4516 bidirectional counters and I wanted to ask a question.  When the count switches from up to down and the counter counts down, will the carry out still trigger to the next cascading counter when the count goes below 0 in the first counter in the series.  Meaning will the down counting carry out throughout the cascading of the counters? Please call me if possible at 724-433-9351.  Thank you.

  • Hi Alec,

You are correct. Taking a look at the timing diagram, Carry Out pulls low once it reaches the last count 0. Then after two clock cycles the device begins counting down again.

The datasheet recommends connecting Carry Out signals with the clock signal using a 2-input OR gate as shown below. This is to avoid the carry out lines from the cascaded counters having a negative-going glitch pulse resulting from differential delays of the different CD4516 devices.

    Regards,

    Sebastian
