    Buffers cannot be bidirectional without a separate direction signal. Such a device is called a transceiver.

    Single-channel transceivers like the SN74LXC1T45 cannot do 40 mA. You'd have to use multiple channels in parallel, e.g., SN74LV245A or SN74AHC245.
