Bidirectional buffering is possible only if there is a direction signal (see any SN74xxx245 transceiver or translator), or if the buffer knows the direction by decoding and understanding the protocol. Without a direction signal, it is not possible to determine if the voltage at pin A should override the voltage at pin B, or if the voltage at pin B should override the voltage at pin A.
