SN54HC595: How to make a test for testing the shift register's basic functionality

I am trying to make some testing instructions and am looking for information and references on how to test this shift register, or any shift register with nothing more than probing and applying power.

Hi Divya,

What are you looking to test? If it is just making sure the shift register works, you can just set up any generic signal into it and run a clock. You should be able to see the signal shift through on clock cycles.

Thanks for the reply, what exactly would I be looking for when it passes that test. As in, what should I document in such cases?

Hi Divya,

I would just run through the truth table shown in the datasheet (below as well), and make sure the device is acting as intended.
