Are the inputs diode protected against negative voltage surges? Would you recommend an external Schottky diode? Would a series resistor be enough?

The absolute maximum ratings say that the clamp current must be limited to less than 50 mA. It is possible to do this with either a Schottky diode or a resistor, depending on the characteristics of the surge.

So, there is a diode internally that clamps the negative voltage on the digital input?
