One unconnected pin on device SN74HC165D

Hello,

In a design i have discovered that there is one input pin left floating. The concerning pin is pin 13 (C). What are the consequences of leaving this pin unconnected. Does it damage the entire IC or only the specific input? What is the worst case that could happen?

Thanks,

Filip

  • If you load data then you may never get the right data loaded. If not then the worst case might be the part would begin to oscillate and draw enough current to be damaged.

More than likely this would not happen but it is possible. Most likely you would just see a higher amount of Icc current because of the floating input. The amout of current would depend on what level the input floats to. Worst case being 1/2 Vcc.

It would be best to tie the input high or low if possible.
