Hi,

if you can help with this customer query?

The TI data sheet for both 74LVC14 and 74LVC00 suggest the recommended Vcc maximum is 3.6 volts, but the absolute max is shown at 6.5 volts. If the Ab max really is 6.5 volts, then why can’t these be used with 5V Vcc? – would there be a reliability issue running at 5v Vcc given this is significantly lower than ab max?

    Hi Jani,

    These devices weren't designed to be used with 5V VCC. They were designed to be used at 1.65-3.6V and then be able to tolerate up to 5V on the input for down-translation/mixed-environment applications. Their overvoltage tolerance is probably why the FETs won't explode if given 5V VCC, but that doesn't mean the device will work within spec or properly at all at that supply level.

    There is a reliability issue in that the customer absorbs all responsibility for any failures at 5V VCC for this part. The part isn't characterized to operate at that voltage and we don't have any data so we can't say whether it will work or not.

    The SN74LVC07A and all little logic devices (e.g., SN74LVC3G17) do support 5 V. I suspect that the problem would be the shoot-through current of many push/pull outputs switching at the same time.
