SN74LVCH244A output drive

According to the datasheet IOH and IOL are 24mA max.  In interfacing with an FPGA, what determines the actual value of IOH?  For instance, though 24mA is the maximum, what factors determine if it is lower. Can it be 4mA, 8mA, etc?

  • The actual Ioh and Iol are determined by the output load. If you are driving another Cmos load (about 1Mohm)then. Ioh and Iol will be in the uamps and Voh and Vol will be at the rails (Vcc and GND.

Ioh and Iol are not even a concern unless you are driving heavy loads like relays or leds or something.  The part can drive more than Ioh and Iol but may not meet Voh and Vol if they are driveing more.
