SN74AC595: Supports Coherent clock/clock echo?

Part Number: SN74AC595
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74AHC595, TLC6C598

Tool/software:

Hello,

I am looking for a 6-10 output, 3.3V Shift register with a  low pin count interface, low latency, and small footprint.

One other requirement is an echo clock output (coherent clock), and to be able to chain 2-8 in a single chain.

Is the SN74AC595 the right part to look at, or do you recommend any other devices?

Thank you for your help.

Best,
John Albrecht

  • Hi John,

It sounds like you want a 164/165 function device such as the SN74AHC164

I've never heard of a echo clock output/coherent clock output, but you can simply tie the QH of one device into both A and B inputs of the next device, and tie the CLK input together will allow for chaining.

  • Hi Owen,

    Thank you for your recommendation!

Are there any concerns to using the SN74AHC595 in the BQB package? (By concerns i mean both 10-15year supply outlook) This part is better because the application  requires an output register.

Regarding the Echo clock, it is my understanding that it is something that TI uses in some LED drivers for daisy chaining.

    Thank you for your help!

  • An example is the TLC6C598, it has a serial output to connect multiple LED drivers, and the DS says "The serial output clocks of the device on the falling edge of SRCK to provide additional hold time for cascaded applications"

  • Hi John,

No concerns using that device. I see I didn't understand I thought you were looking for a CLK_OUT pin. Any of the 595 devices will have that cascading clock. For these 595 devices it is the QH' pin in the DS.
