LM5116: Shunt placement and trigger logic.

Part Number: LM5116
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5190

Tool/software:

Hi Members,

We are using LM5116 as a current limiting IC during charging the battery from another battery (parallel operation of batteries).

We need to limit the current and we want to know about the placement of shunt resistor placed between the LO Mosfet and ground.

Can we place the shunt across HO Mosfet or in series with the Inductor or is it placement specific and as be shown in datasheet (i.e. across LO & GND)? Since this is being used to trigger the current limit comparator and we want to limit the current during the rising slope of the inductor.

Also, can you explain how the current limit comparator will be trigger as shown in the internal circuit between CS & CSG pins.

Thanks, in advance!!

  • Hello Hitesh

Please consider using LM5190(-Q1) https://www.ti.com/product/LM5190 . This device does Constant-Current Constant-Voltage (CC-CV) regulation which limits the output current (average inductor current) accurately.

LM5116 device employees ECM which requires to sample & hold the current flowing through the low-side MOSFET. The current sense resistor should be between the source connection of the low-side MOSFET and GND. Please refer the section 6.3.6., 6.3.7 of the datasheet for more information about the peak current limit function of LM5116 https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/lm5116.pdf
