SN7407: "Per Buffer" sink current is not explicitly stated on the datasheet and neither is "Total package" current sinking

Part Number: SN7407
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74LVC07A, TPL7407LA

Tool/software:

We have been looking over the SN7407 datasheet and it keeps saying that the maximum output current is 40ma, but is does explicitly say " per buffer" or Total Package dissipation. It is important for us to get clarity on this.

We need to sink about 8ma per buffer and if the total package rating is 40ma we have exceeded this.

So we would like clarity on the "per buffer" max sink current and the "total package" current handling.

Thank you,

  • IOL is specified per pin.

    The total current would be thermally limited, but in your case (assuming actual VOL = 0.3 V), the increase over ambient would be only 86.8 °C/W × (30 mA × 5 V + 6 × 8 mA × 0.3 V) ≈ 14 °C.

The SN74LVC07A or TPL7407LA would use less power.
