SN74AUCH16374: Variation in TPD

Part Number: SN74AUCH16374

Tool/software:

Logic team,

Our customer needs to operate at a high clock frequency of 125 MHz, and is limited by this spec in our part,

TPD at Vcc = 1.8V

Min = 0.7ns

Typ = 1.5ns

Max = 2.8ns

This means the propagation delay can be as short as 0.7ns or up to 2.8ns, so they could see a variation of 2.1ns.

The customer will only operate in a small temperature window.  Can we give a tighter spec knowing they will only operate from about 20C to 50C?

Thanks,
Darren

  • Hi Darren,

    The SN74AUCH16374 can work with clock speeds up to 250 MHz, so it seems like the frequency is not the problem.

    The typical propagation delay is 1.5 ns. The 0.7 ns to 2.8 ns range that is listed in the datasheet is dependent on a lot of factors, but you're correct that one of those variables is temperature. The minimum and maximum are guarantees that we can make based on simulations and bench testing, and the numbers include a healthy margin for error.

    Nikki

  • Hi Nikki,

    Yes, this is what I suspected.  So if it's a bell curve, can we give a tighter bell curve based on the much smaller temperature range?  Do we have any way to provide that spec?

    If not, is there a different part they can select that's the same functionality as SN74AUCH16374, with tighter specs?

    Thanks,
    Darren

  • Hi Darren,

    Unfortunately we cannot provide a new spec because we want to be able to guarantee the device's functionality. The specs written on the datasheet represent what we can guarantee due to variability in manufacturing. This is also the fastest silicon with the tightest specs we can provide.

    Regards,

    Nikki
