SN74GTL2003: level translation solution for data buses

Hello,

I'm looking for a voltage level translation solution for an 8-bit data bus between a 5V processor and a 3.3V FPGA.

The bus is a 3-state bus managed by the processor.

I had identified the SN74GTL2003, but I've noticed that it requires low-value pull-up resistors, which can lead to significant power consumption in some cases.

I've also seen the TXS0108E; would it be suitable? It doesn't seem to require pull-up resistors.

Would a solution using the SN74CB3T3245 be appropriate?

Hi Christopher,

If your signals are fast, then strong pullups would be needed due to the open-drain architecture of the outputs of the GTL2003. There are dedicated push-pull output level shifters such as the AVC8T245/AXC8T245 that can be used instead (pullups would no longer be needed as well) if your signals are fixed direction.

Thank you for your reply.
The data bus in question is bidirectional and does not allow for a signal to control the direction.

Hello,

In that case, the TXS0108E can be an attractive option and also eliminates the need for external pullups (unlike the GTL2003). For best design practices with the TXS, please reference: www.ti.com/.../scea135.pdf
