I am thinking of using USB for both BOOT and image file writing.
I want to keep the USB circuit configuration simple, so I plan to use the same circuit for both BOOT and image file writing.
(No hub or multiplexer is needed.)

I am looking at the circuit diagram of the J722S EVM, but I cannot understand it because the hub and other components are connected in a complicated way.

Please provide circuit diagram information that might be helpful.

I see the design files of the EVM here, and I see the complete EVM schematics on it.

J722SXH01EVM Evaluation board | TI.com

The USB0 and USB1 are the 2 instances of the USB and USB1 has USB2.0 and USB3.0 (through SERDES) and USB0 supports only USB2.0.

You could simplify it by running the USB0 into type-A port and have another USB1 going through the another typeA port(or typeC) but connected through the SERDES pins.
