SN74ALS09: Replacement with a new device

Part Number: SN74ALS09
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74HCS09

Hi,

We have received a Product Discontinuation Notice (PDN) for the SN74ALS09N.

The document suggests "SN74LVC09BBQAR" as a replacement, but we are unable to locate this device. Could this be a typo?

For a potential replacement, we are considering the following:
1. Would the SN74HCS09 be a suitable choice, even though it has a different package?
2. The SN74LS09N is currently still listed as "Active"—would it be acceptable to use it in a new design?

Could you please advise on the product(s) recommended by TI?
Thank you for your assistance.

Best Regards,
Hiroshi

  • The SN74HCS09 has different electrical characteristics, especially input switching threshold voltages and output drive strength (which might or might not matter in your circuit).

The SN75LS09N is currently listed as "last time buy".

There is no other '08 device in a DIP package. I recommend to use the SN74ALS09DR; if you cannot change your board, you have to create an adapter daughterboard.

  • Hello Hiroshi-san,

I expect Clemens's advice is good.

I just wanted to mention that I would not recommend using any PDIP packages in new designs. The PDIP package is an older design that incurs high cost and poor performance when compared with modern packaging options and most companies are moving away from it for those reasons.

I would suggest taking the opportunity to modernize your system and update the board to use newer CMOS technology and a more popular package such as TSSOP or even a QFN option. We are happy to help with the update if you can share details on what you need.

  • Hi Clemens-san, Emrys-san,

    Thank you for your support.
As we first need to inform the customer's purchasing department about potential alternatives, we would like to propose the SN74ALS09DR (in an SOIC package).
I will mark this thread as resolved for now.
Should any further questions arise from our engineers, we will reach out to you again.

    Best Regards,
    Hiroshi
