Draining of RTC battery (Lithium coin battery) in the off condition.

Hi,

I used a Lithium coin battery (part number BR-2330/HEN) as a back up voltage for RTC chip (part number DS1307). The board works normal. But after storing a number of boards for around 1 month, the RTC battery got drained off (from 3V to 0.5 or 0.3V). I replaced the battery after which the RTC functionality works normal.

What may be the reason for draining of the battery? The current capacity of the battery is 255mAh. As per the datasheet the leakage current through the RTC chip backup voltage pin is in nano amps range. I don't find any path for the discharge. And this is the battery recommended for the RTC chip mentioned here.

Please drop your comments/suggestions/observations about this issue.

The DS1307, if I am not mistaken, is a device from Maxim. You should check at their website or representative.

Hello Vijetha,

One possibilty, I still think it is remote, is that they may have been stored in anti-static bags which are conductive. This is well known to reduce battery life. I'm not sure it would bring it down to months thought.
