ULN2003 total power capability

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ULN2003A

I have a quick question about the ULN2003. I know that it can handle 500mA per pin, but is there a limit for the whole IC? Can I max out 500mA per 7 pins for 3.5A total?

  • Hi Jason

The maximum collector current will drop with increasing output number. Please refer to Figure 14 and Figure 15 in ULN2003 datasheet. These two figures  give the max collector current with different output numbers.

  • Thank you Lawrence.

That is pretty surprising to me.  So if I am reading that right, if I am using all 7 channels, with 100% duty cycle, I only get <100mA current per channel in the D package and ~100mA current with the N package?  That is much less than I thought it would be.

Does it matter that my ambient will probably be closer to 20C or less?

And how do I know if something is s D package versus N package?

  • Hi Jason,

The output current has relationship with temperature. Please refer to Figure 17 in ULN2003A datasheet.

The typical value in Fig 17 can be recognized output current at room temperature.
