SN74LV4051A

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74LV4051A

Hi all,

My customer have a question about SN74LV4051A.

When selecting the switch from Y7 to Y6, does SN74LV4051A perform sequence in switching?
 For example,

 1. Y7/ON -> Y7/OFF -> Y6/ON
 2. Y7/ON ->Y7/OFF & Y6/ON at the same time
 3. Changing at the same time and there is a possibility of Y7/ON and Y6/ON for a very short time

Regards,
Toshi

  • Toshi,

    The block diagram in the datasheet shows that the signal, which controls both output 6 and 7, comes from the output of the second inverting buffer on selection input C. This means the outputs should both change instantaneously as you mention in case 2. However, the datasheet specifies maximum propagation delays in the switching characteristics section which vary based on the load capacitance and voltage. Depending on variations in the output loads and variations in the die from manufacturing, it is possible that case 1 or case 3 could happen if the two channels have different propagation delays.

    In summary, if there is an overlap of both outputs being on or off at the same time, it will be a lot less than the propagation delay: probably less than a few nanoseconds.

    I hope that helped,

    James
