Level shifter for Ethernet GMII interface

Hi Team,

We are asked for a level shifter which could shift to 2.5V/3.3V from 1.2V/1.8V. As customer will use the level shifter in the GMII interface, clock frequency would be 125MHz. I believe that SN74AVCxxT245 (xx = 8,16) series would meet the level shifter and clock frequency specification because SN74AVCxxxx D flipflop device supports up to 200MHz.

Could you advise us if there is a better solution than the above devices ?

We also appreciate it if you could tell us the limitations if there are any.

    For SN74AVCXXT245, the data rate will depend on voltage supply and output load. For example, SN74AVC8T245 can support 170Mbps when VCCA is less than 1.8V and it can support 320Mbps when VCCA and VCCB is more than 1.8V under output load is less than 15pF. It is better to run some simulation with translation device IBIS model to make sure the translator performance.

    Could you please tell me which process family could support high frequency ? Is AVC part the fastest ?

    It would be helpful if there is maximum frequency or data rate as a reference information in the product list at TI.com.

  • Hi Kawai-san,

    If higher voltage supply is less than 3.3V,  AVC parts are suitable device. If higher supply is less than 5V, please choose LVC parts. For AVC parts, when voltage translation is from 1.8V to 3.3V, 300Mbps can achieved under 15pF cap load.
